A mother in Nigeria has come forward with allegations that her son, Erasmus Emhenya, was falsely accused, arrested, and tortured to death by Nigerian police officers in Abuja.
Despite evidence of misconduct, justice seems out of reach for the grieving family, as shared on Brekete Family, a human rights advocacy programme.
Her heartbreaking account reveals how she learned of her son’s tragic fate through a source within the police cell.
She recounted the distress of trying to identify her son’s body at the police station.
Describing the police’s dismissal of her grief, she tearfully remembered being told to leave when she attempted to see her son.
Responding to the incident, SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Police Command, refuted claims of torture leading to Erasmus’s death while in custody on April 6, 2023.
Thorough investigations, including an autopsy, were conducted to establish the cause of death and ruled out torture as a contributing factor, according to Adeh.
SP Adeh welcomed concerned parties to access detailed information at the FCT Police Command headquarters, emphasizing the commitment to transparency and upholding the rule of law.
The statement aimed to address issues and maintain transparency amidst public scrutiny over the case.
