NEMA Delivers Aid to Survivors of Niger Tanker Blaze Disaster

Relief Aid Distributed to Niger Tanker Explosion Victims

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has provided essential supplies, including food, non-food items, and medical assistance, to aid the victims and their families affected by the petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction, Niger State.

This information was shared by the agency in a statement on Tuesday.

The explosion occurred on Saturday morning on Dikko-Maje Road, near Baddegi Station. It was reportedly caused when a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit experienced an accident, spilling fuel during an attempted transfer to another tanker, which ignited upon contact with a generator used for the transfer.

The tragic event resulted in 98 fatalities, left 69 individuals injured, and destroyed 20 shops.

NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, visited the site to oversee the delivery of relief supplies. She mentioned that this response aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s orders and reflects the Federal Government’s dedication to supporting the affected community in their recovery efforts.

Mrs. Umar stated, “Based on the preliminary rapid assessment conducted by officials of NEMA, NSEMA, and other first responders, we are here to provide immediate assistance with food, non-food items, and medical supplies to the affected families.”

She expressed her condolences to the community, assuring them that NEMA will lead a thorough recovery initiative. Furthermore, she highlighted the importance of communities prioritizing preparedness for disasters and taking proactive steps to protect lives and property.

The Director General praised the quick actions of first responders, including NEMA, Niger State Emergency Management Agency, firefighters, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, medical teams, local security, community volunteers, and other contributors who worked diligently to save lives and minimize damage.

Notable attendees included the Deputy Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Afiniki Daudu, who expressed gratitude for the Federal Government’s rapid response in providing relief through NEMA. Others present were Alhaji Abdulhalim Abubakar, Chairman of Gurara Local Government Area, Abdullahi Arah, Director General of Niger State SEMA, and various community leaders.
