Netflix acquires Kumail Nanjiani-Issa Rae comedy The Lovebirds

The Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) and Issa Rae (Insecure)-led romantic comedy The Lovebirds was one of the unfortunate casualties in Paramount’s calendar shuffling amidst global coronavirus concerns and now it appears that in a deal between Netflix and the studio, as well as production company Media Rights Capital, it will be heading to the streaming service, according to Deadline.

The film was originally slated premiere at the Austin, Texas-based South by Southwest Film Festival before the event was cancelled, as well as was set to hit theaters on April 3 before being pulled by Paramount alongside A Quiet Place Part II and Blue Story. This also marks the second time the streaming service has acquired a film from the studio after surprise announcing during the 2018 Super Bowl Netflix would be debuting The Cloverfield Paradox after the game.

A couple (Issa Rae & Kumail Nanjiani) experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery. As their journey to clear their names takes them from one extreme – and hilarious – circumstance to the next, they must figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.

The comedy crime drama also stars Emmy nominee Paul Sparks (House of Cards), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect trilogy), and Kyle Bornheimer (Marriage Story).

The movie is directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) and written by Aaron Abrams (The Go-Getters) and Brendan Gall (Blindspot, The Go-Getters) from a story by Martin Gero. Tom Lassally, Oly Obst, Todd Shulman, Jordana Mollick and Gero will produce, with Nanjiani, Rae, and Showalter all serving as executive producers.
