President Bola Tinubu has been told not to allow the Niger Republic coup stand.
The call was made by the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi.
He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use his influence as the ECOWAS Chairman to thwart the coup d’etat against President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger Republic.
The monarch stated that making such a move would strengthen Africa’s democracy and return sanity to civilian government in the continent.
Oluwo made the call via a statement made available by his media aide, Alli Ibraheem, on Thursday.
He called on Tinubu to use his position to avert a military government in the country and return it to civil rule.
Oba Akanbi also suggested a harmonised command of Africa’s military forces to ensure that the coup d’etat in Niger didn’t survive.
He insisted that for democracy to be strengthened in Africa, the promotion of democratic system of government devoid of military incursion and interference was necessary.
In his words, “Such a move will strengthen Africa’s democracy and return sanity to civilian government in the continent.
“Being the ECOWAS Chairman and President of Nigeria, adjudged to be the giant of Africa, no coup must survive under your watch as ECOWAS Chairman. External authorities and forces have to be mobilized to grow Africa democracy and ensure sanity.
“Defending democracy is the primary task of ECOWAS authority. I’m convinced Tinubu will lead the body constructively by fortifying the system in favour of democracy. Democracy will survive in Africa.”
