NLC Calls for Strike Over Minimum Wage Issues

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed workers in states that have not yet implemented the new minimum wage of ₦70,000 to initiate a strike.

This strike is set to start on December 1, 2024, targeting those states that are non-compliant.

This decision was made during the recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held over the weekend.

The NLC criticized those governors who have not adopted the new minimum wage law, describing their actions as a betrayal, which unjustly prevents workers from receiving what they rightfully deserve.

“The NEC expresses considerable frustration regarding the ongoing delays and outright refusal by some state governments to enact the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act.

“This disregard by certain governors contradicts both legal and moral standards, as workers endure increasing economic strain while being deprived of their wages. Such actions show a blatant neglect for both the law and the welfare of numerous Nigerian workers, who face exploitation from those entrusted to protect their interests,” stated a portion of the NLC announcement.

The NLC also mentioned the formation of a committee dedicated to ensuring the new minimum wage is implemented nationwide.

“The NEC has resolved to create a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee which will undertake a comprehensive evaluation, mobilization, and awareness campaign. This initiative aims to educate workers and the public about the importance of resisting these violations of their rights. Moreover, the NLC plans to launch a series of industrial actions in states that fail to comply until the minimum wage is fully enacted across Nigeria,” the announcement added.

“All state councils that have not completed the implementation of the National Minimum Wage by the end of November 2024 must commence their strike action starting December 1, 2024. The demand for justice from Nigerian workers is firm, and they will pursue it,” concluded the statement.
