Oscar Isaac Reveals If He Play Poe Dameron in a New Disney+ Series

Few franchises have been as prominent this decade as Star Wars. As the Skywalker Saga is coming to a close, Disney is focusing on Star Wars-themed Disney+ series to keep the franchise going. Oscar Isaac, the acclaimed actor who plays Poe Dameron in the sequel trilogy, was asked if he would like to star in his own Disney+ series. Here’s what he had to say.

The crazy history of ‘Star Wars’ TV

Star Wars television has a storied and bumpy history. It all began in 1978, a mere year after the first Star Wars film was released. That year saw the premiere of The Star Wars Holiday Special, an unmitigated disaster.

The Star Wars Holiday Special had the format of a 1970s variety show. It featured comedy skits, an animated segment, and a guest performance from Jefferson Starship. The special was panned by critics and audiences alike, but it became legendary to fans of bad movies.

Several years later, the popularity of Return of the Jedi led to a pair of made-for-TV Ewok movies: Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. The films don’t have the horrid reputation of The Star Wars Holiday Special, however, they aren’t regarded as  cinematic masterpieces either. Only the most dedicated Star Wars fans have bothered to watch them.

Since then, all Star Wars television shows have been animated. Star Wars animated television series include Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, both of which have dedicated fans. Some consider these shows to be on par with the theatrical Star Wars films in terms of quality.

Will Oscar Isaac find a home on Disney+?

This brings us to the age of Disney+. Star Wars is one of the most lucrative properties which Disney owns, so it’s no wonder the studio has given us The Mandalorian, a show based on a warrior culture from the franchise.

According to Collider, another Star Wars series about Obi-Wan Kenobi is on its way. The series will star Ewan McGregor, who played Kenobi  in the prequel trilogy. This announcement led many fans to wonder if there will be future Disney+ series centered on beloved Star Wars characters.

When Oscar Isaac was asked if he would like to reprise the role of Poe Dameron in a Disney+ series, his answer was definitive. He told Collider “Nope!” Keri Russell, his co-star in The Rise of Skywalker, laughed at his response.

Russell asked him if he would reprise the role for $3 million an episode. Isaac responded “Cashing in my chips!” Russell said Isaac was done with his time in the Star Wars galaxy.

Is this the end of the story?

Isaac did not specify why he had no interest in continuing to play Dameron. It’s not clear if he’s sick of the character, Star Wars, or Hollywood blockbusters in general. His comments are a bit of a disappointment to fans of the character.

However, this is no reason to fret. Isaac could always change his mind. Anything’s possible in a galaxy far, far away.
