Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election, has expressed serious worries about the increasing insecurity in the country.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), he emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue of kidnapping and called on the government to act swiftly to rescue those who have been taken and hold criminals accountable.

Obi, who formerly served as the governor of Anambra State, highlighted that the rising incidents of kidnapping and violence are impacting all members of society, particularly affecting vital sectors like agriculture, education, and healthcare.

He stated, “The rise in crime, especially kidnappings, is alarming and creating a lot of fear across the nation.”

“At this moment, no one is exempt from the terrifying trend of kidnappings and violence affecting various areas of the country.

“The current climate of insecurity impacts every Nigerian, disrupting sectors like agriculture, where farmers are often forced from their land, as well as healthcare and education, where vital personnel often face abduction or worse.”

“The frequent kidnapping and sometimes murder of our farmers, teachers, and educators in schools illustrate this reality.

“Just recently, the Manager of the College of Nursing Sciences in Ihiala was killed. Additionally, two Reverend Sisters, one serving as a Principal and the other as a teacher, were kidnapped in Anambra state yesterday.”

“These individuals play crucial roles in enhancing our national development through their dedicated work in agriculture, education, and health services in remote areas.”

“There is no justification for these abductions and the violence many Nigerians face on a daily basis.”

“This alarming situation requires immediate action from our leaders.”

“One has to question how many cases of kidnapping and murder go unreported if the current statistics are this high?”

“I once again urge the government to utilize every available resource to combat this threat and to ensure the safe return of captives. To those perpetrating violence, I urge you to reconsider your actions and stop these harmful behaviors.”

“We cannot allow our country to be destroyed by terror and violence.”
