Tragedy struck at the Saints Academy in Jos on Friday, July 12, as the school building collapsed while students were in the midst of their third term exams. The incident resulted in 22 fatalities.
NEMA Director General, Zubaida Umar, paid a visit to the site and expressed deep regret at the loss of lives, emphasizing that engaging professionals during construction could have prevented such a calamity.
“I decided to come myself because it is such a huge and avoidable loss. It is something that could have been totally avoidable. It is a lesson for all of us that we need to get all developers to adhere to building codes and the plans and ensure the right thing is done.”
The Plateau State Government reported 22 casualties and 132 injuries resulting from the tragic incident.
