President Bola Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has set up the Ministry of Livestock Development to address the ongoing clashes between farmers and herders across the nation.
The establishment of the ministry was made public during the launch of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee.
The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and other government officials.
In September 2023, President Tinubu approved the formation of the Presidential Committee focused on revamping the livestock sector and finding sustainable solutions to the recurring conflicts between herders and farmers in Nigeria.
This decision came after the submission of a report from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria, where the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) urged the president to establish a livestock ministry.
MACBAN president Alhaji Baba Usman Ngelzarma emphasized the need for a dedicated ministry for livestock to address comprehensive issues within the livestock value chain, encompassing production, processing, marketing, transportation, and security concerns.
