Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, the Military Public Information Officer of Operation SAFE HAVEN, revealed on Saturday that two suspects were apprehended while attempting to sell ammunition valued at N5 million.

Troops from Operation Safe Haven have successfully captured two infamous gunrunners in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Weapons were seized during the operation, and the suspects, Matawal Bitrus and Thomas Benedict, were caught in the act.

According to Major Zhakom’s statement, the suspects were arrested on the verge of selling ammunition worth N5 million.

“Just 72 hours following the capture of five notorious gunrunners and the recovery of automatic firearms alongside approximately 6,000 rounds of various ammunition at Bayameni along Bauchi Road in Jos North LGA on September 17, 2024, Operation SAFE HAVEN executed further actions in Bokkos Town on September 18, 2024,”
the statement noted.

“The intelligence-driven sting operations led to the unearthing of another criminal network as they were attempting to conclude sales of arms and ammunition valued at Five Million Naira (N5,000,000.00) at Banana Island Hotel in Bokkos.

“As a result, two gunrunners, Matawal Bitrus and Thomas Benedict, were taken into custody, and the following automatic arms were seized:

a. Two AK-47 Rifles.
b. One Automatic Pistol.
c. Two AK-47 magazines.
d. One Beretta Pistol Magazine

“The suspects are now in custody for interrogation to extract further information aimed at capturing more members of the ongoing gunrunning operations.

“This recent apprehension and the recovery of firearms across both Jos North and Bokkos LGAs reinforce the understanding that criminality knows no ethnic or religious borders.

“Criminal activity is a shared threat that warrants a united response to ensure law-abiding citizens can pursue their daily lives without fear. It has been affirmed that the spread of firearms is a significant contributor to security hazards, and Operation SAFE HAVEN stands firmly, alongside other security forces, to combat such illegal undertakings.

“We urge the residents of Plateau, Bauchi, and Southern Kaduna to continue sharing credible information with security agencies, aiding in the fight against criminal behavior to develop a safer community.

“For quick responses to security issues, our newly established toll-free number at 08000020203 is available 24/7 for emergencies and information sharing. Rest assured, we will always respond promptly. Thank you.”
