On Tuesday, November 3, the Nigerian Senate officially appointed Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) during a plenary session.
This followed the Senate’s approval of the Committee on Army’s report regarding Oluyede’s screening.
The report was delivered by Committee Chairman, Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’adua (APC-Katsina).
Yar’adua conveyed that the committee was highly impressed by the nominee’s extensive knowledge, achievements, and overall excellence as outlined in his credentials.
He noted that Oluyede’s nomination is consistent with Section 217, Subsection 2 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, as amended, and is also aligned with Section 18, Subsection 1 of the Armed Forces Act.
Furthermore, he affirmed that the nominee has the necessary skills, experience, and educational background for the Chief of Army Staff role.
Yar’adua emphasized that Oluyede had received clearance from the DSS and followed all appropriate promotion protocols to reach this position, qualifying him to serve as Chief of Army Staff.
He stated that the committee conducted a thorough and careful screening of the nominee, resulting in great satisfaction with his qualifications, conduct, and experience, encouraging the Senate to endorse the nomination.
Following this, the Senate confirmed Oluyede’s appointment as the new COAS.
