Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. — known to the world as Snoop Dogg — has definitely had a fascinating life. After spending his early years in and out of jail for drug charges, Snoop Dogg climbed to the top of the charts in the hip hop world just as the genre was reaching its peak. He then branched out into the reality TV world, befriended Martha Stewart, and became a marijuana mogul.
It’s safe to say that Snoop Dogg has one of the most interesting life trajectories in the entertainment world. Now it appears that Snoop Dogg is set to stretch his skills even further by taking on a whole new musical genre.
Snoop Dogg’s early days were violent and crime-ridden
Snoop Dogg was born in Long Beach, California in 1971. He got his famous nickname because his mother thought he looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts comic strip.
His early adulthood was filled with criminal activity and violence. He was arrested several times for drug possession and was famously associated with the Rollin’ 20s Crips Gang, an affiliation he nods to often in his song lyrics. In 1996, he was even tried (and later acquitted) for murder charges.
The rapper’s breakthrough in the music world came when he got connected with Dr. Dre. When Dre’s hit solo album The Chronic exploded in popularity, it took Snoop Dogg, who performed on several tracks, along with it.
What followed was a series of hit records punctuated by contract disputes and label hopping, but the end result was a decades-long career that left Snoop Dogg solidly embedded in hip hop’s greatest era.
Snoop Dogg branched out into acting and entrepreneurship
Beginning in the early 2000s, Snoop Dogg decided to try his hand in the acting world, and he has had a steady television presence ever since. Taking on mostly small guest roles in television series and films, he has made a wide variety of appearances including dramas like Training Day, comedies like The Bernie Mac Show, and long-running staples like Law & Order: SVU.
Never one to be boxed in, he once again expanded his economic portfolio by trying out a new endeavor: the legal weed industry. A natural fit to be the face of marijuana, Snoop Dogg is part of Casa Verde Capital, a venture capital firm specializing in cannabis. He has also served as a brand ambassador for Seedo Homelab, a high-tech marijuana endeavor that uses artificial intelligence to assist with hydroponic grow labs.
It appears Snoop Dogg is ready to branch out again
Snoop Dogg’s huge set of skills has left him with some unusual talents, and now he’s ready to try out yet another unique opportunity. His main hits are centered around drinking, drugs, and violence, so if you were going to name someone who would be great for creating children’s lullabies, Snoop Dogg would probably be pretty low on the list.
However, that’s exactly what the hip hop artist turned weed entrepreneur and cookbook author has in the works. The lullaby album will feature kid-friendly versions of some of his greatest hits including “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Doggy Dogg World.”
The project is a partnership with Rockabye Baby! Music and Snoop Dogg won’t be the only rapper lending his talents to help lull tots to sleep. Artists like Eminem and Kanye West have worked with the company in the past.
Whether the upcoming album, titled Lullaby Renditions of Snoop Dogg, will be more of a novelty gift that nostalgic adults pass along for a laugh or a legitimately soothing set of lullabies that have tiny tots calling out for more remains to be seen. Whatever the case, we can rest assured that Snoop Dogg will continue to take on interesting projects and demonstrate just how versatile his many skills can be.
