Steve Carell Brings Chaos to the Moon in New ‘Space Force’ Trailer

Steve Carell is tasked with militarizing space in the new Netflix original series Space Force, and as you can imagine, hijinks ensue.

In the latest trailer for the show, which premieres May 29th on the streaming platform, Carell is a four-star general given the assignment to lead the newly launched Space Force division of the U.S. government — a wink to President Donald Trump’s own “Space Force” proposal.

Carell co-created the 10-part comedy series with Greg Daniels, showrunner for the U.S. version of The Office, so Carell’s character is just as inept a leader in the trailer as he was on the iconic sitcom. Still, the military aspects of the show are a bit more realistic.

“We wanted to make sure that we were being accurate and more than respectful — I would say complimentary — of the military virtues that Steve’s character holds,” Daniels said in a statement. “We have astronaut advisors, science advisors and our military advisor, Mark Vazquez, has been very useful in teaching us about military behavior. Both Steve and I have relatives in the military who we love and respect, and hope are going to enjoy watching the show.”

As General Mark R. Naird, Carell ridicules his colleagues in the trailer for suggesting that the surface of the moon is complex, his attempt at running in a new spacesuit goes haywire when he quickly runs out of breath.”So the game of mental chess has begun,” he tells a scientist played by John Malkovich.

“It’s Hungry Hungry Hippos at best,” Malkovich responds.

The series also stars Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome, Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy O. Yang and Noah Emmerich.
