‘Taylor Swift: Miss Americana’ Documentary to Premiere at Sundance

After spending more than half of her life in the spotlight, the world is more enamored than ever with Taylor Swift. Perhaps that is why Netflix felt compelled to compile footage from the last few years of her life for an upcoming documentary entitled: Taylor Swift: Miss Americana. The documentary likely takes its name from a song on Swift’s latest album, Lover. The song “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince” is the seventh song on Swift’s seventh album. Swift has been candid about the fact that she used high school metaphors to express her disappointment about the state of politics in the U.S. for the catchy tune.

Netflix announces the release date of the documentary

On December 4, 2019, Netflix made the announcement via Twitter that Swift’s documentary would be premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2020. Sundance is the largest annual independent film festival in the United States. It takes place in Park City, Utah each year and the upcoming festival will take place from January 23, 2020, through February 2, 2020. But, even though Netflix recently made the announcement about the documentary, Swifties have known about its existence for a few weeks.

Taylor Swift fights for right to perform her old songs

On November 14, 2019, Swift took to her Tumblr, Twitter, and Instagram pages to inform her fans that the executives at her old label company, Big Machine Records, were blocking her from performing her old songs at the American Music Awards. In the process, she also announced to her fans that she had an upcoming Netflix documentary that they were also being very uncooperative about.

“Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun have now said that I’m not allowed to perform my old songs on television because they claim that would be re-recording my music before I’m allowed to next year. Additionally – and this isn’t the way I had planned on telling you this news – Netflix has created a documentary about my life for the past few years. Scott and Scooter have declined the use of my older music or performance footage for this project, even though there is no mention of either of them or Big Machine Records anywhere in the film,” the 29-year-old confessed about Taylor Swift: Miss Americana.

Braun eventually gave Swift permission to perform any of her songs at the AMA’s, though his permission was not legally required. Perhaps the issue of Swift’s documentary was resolved as well. But, just what can we expect from this documentary? Netflix has offered up a description of the film, which seeks to cover how Swift has come into her own over the past several years. Fans will have the opportunity to see just how the “False God” songstress has managed to navigate a career full of increasing success and criticism.

“TAYLOR SWIFT: MISS AMERICANA Dir. Lana Wilson A raw and emotionally revealing look at one of the most iconic artists of our time as she learns to embrace her role not only as a songwriter and performer, but as a woman harnessing the full power of her voice,” Netflix tweeted out about the film. We’re sure that Swifties around the globe are chomping at the bit to get an in-depth look at the singer’s professional life. But, only time will tell how the film performs at Sundance.
