Muyiwa Awoniyi, the manager of award-winning artist Tems, has pointed out the significant differences in streaming income between Nigeria and other parts of the world.

In a recent discussion on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Awoniyi explained that the minimal earnings from Nigerian streams are linked to the country’s low subscription costs and economic challenges.

He noted that while “one million streams in Nigeria brings in around $300,” the same number of streams in Sweden can earn between “$8,000 and $10,000.”

“Are you aware of how much a million streams is worth from Nigeria? It’s just $300. The Spotify subscription costs only N900, and they operate regionally,” he stated.

“Many people aren’t aware of this, by the way. So for me, I always understood that if my IP is tied to a region where one million streams equates to $300, I’m in trouble. I recognized this back during Nonso’s era because, as I mentioned, the economic trickle-down effect impacts everyday citizens significantly.

“Your spending power will obviously be constrained. Do you know which territory earns the most on Spotify? It’s Sweden, Spotify’s home country. A million streams there can earn anywhere from 8 to 10 grand.”

Burna Boy previously advised his peers to diversify their revenue sources beyond Nigerian streams.

He remarked that topping charts on any streaming service in Nigeria is not a major achievement.

Muyiwa is a prominent music executive and the founder of BSB Management Agency, where he has represented artists like Tems, Omah Lay, and Nonso Amadi.
