Funso Doherty
Funso Doherty, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State for 2023, has revealed the rationale behind his switch to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Doherty acknowledged the dominance of Nigeria’s political landscape by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and PDP, forming a two-party system.
In an interview with Silverbird TV, Doherty expressed his desire to challenge the political status quo in Lagos by consolidating the opposition.
He explained, “The move from ADC to PDP signifies the evolution of our political journey. My debut was with the ADC during the last elections where I contested for the governorship, gaining visibility and recognition.
“In Nigerian democracy, similar to other nations practicing a first-past-the-post electoral system, there is a tendency towards the dominance of major parties, leading to a quasi two-party system resembling that of the US and UK.
“To effectively contest against the ruling party in our context, aligning with a strong unified opposition is imperative. This transition is a strategic step in that direction as we aim to contribute to this consolidating effort.”
