Ali Ndume
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has reached out to Senator Ali Ndume after his dismissal as the Senate Chief Whip, urging him to consider joining their party.
This appeal was made by the SDP National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, at a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday.
Gabam criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for what he deemed as an intolerant act in removing Ndume due to his criticisms of governmental programs and policies.
“The Social Democratic Party is inviting Senator Ali Ndume to join our ranks in light of his unjust removal as Chief Whip of the Senate for voicing concerns against the government,” stated Gabam.
Following his removal, Ndume of APC-Borno South was replaced by Senator Mohammed Monguno of APC-Borno North.
The decision to replace Ndume came after a letter titled “Complaints Against the Unbecoming Utterances of Sen. Ali Ndume” was read during the plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Gabam defended Ndume’s right to critique the government, emphasizing that his remarks were valid and demonstrated his commitment to the welfare of Nigerian citizens.
He stated, “Instead of ousting Ndume, APC and the government should have addressed the genuine issues he raised,”
The SDP chairman criticized the lack of tolerance for differing viewpoints within the ruling party and highlighted the importance of dissent in a healthy democracy.
He extended an official invitation to Ndume to join the SDP and continue advocating for social justice, good governance, and democratic principles.
Gabam praised Ndume’s brave stance against authoritarian tendencies and urged the ruling party and Presidency to be open to criticism and actively engage with the concerns of Nigerians.
He expressed concern over Ndume’s removal and likened it to the suspension of Sen. Abdul Ningi and the experiences of Sen. Ahmed Lawan and Sen. Adams Oshiomole for speaking out against the government.
He warned that such actions undermine democratic principles and fair hearing.
