Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s former Vice President, has called on the current President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to prioritize the well-being of Nigerians amidst significant economic challenges.
During his speech at the 2024 Women in Management, Business, and Public Service (WIMBIZ) conference, Osinbajo stressed the importance of implementing social welfare programs and affordable healthcare, as many citizens are grappling with escalating prices for basic necessities such as food, transport, and housing.
“The cost of living is overwhelming Nigerians’ hope for survival,” he stated, highlighting the pressing issue of food insecurity that particularly affects vulnerable populations, including children. He called for enhanced support systems to help meet fundamental needs.
Osinbajo also brought attention to Nigeria’s concerning literacy rates, especially in northern areas, where a significant percentage of women are uneducated.
“A country where half the population is socially and economically disempowered due to illiteracy will find development difficult, if not impossible,” he commented.
He advocated for broad social interventions to tackle these pervasive issues, emphasizing that initiatives aimed at improving literacy and economic empowerment are vital for Nigeria’s development.
