Ana de Armas got her start in 2007 in a Spanish drama series called El Internado, People reports. She moved to Los Angeles in 2014 and was cast in Hands of Stone as well as Todd Phillips’ War Dogs, where she played Miles Teller’s girlfriend. She played an android named Joi in 2017’s Bladerunner 2049 and landed a gig in 2019’s Knives Out.
It was arguably Knives Out, directed by Rian Johnson, that pushed Ana into mainstream consciousness. She plays Marta Cabrera, a Latina immigrant who looks after Christopher Plummer’s character, Harlan Thrombey. Interestingly, Ana almost didn’t take the role because, according to the Los Angeles Times, she saw a description in the audition scene that read: “Caretaker, Latina, pretty.” The reductionist description of her character made Ana upset. “I’ve seen that before,” she told the L.A. Times. “‘Latina,’ I have no problem with, because I’m Cuban and very proud to be Cuban,” she told the L.A. Times. “But that [description] didn’t say anything to me. There’s no information at all about her character.”
Fortunately, Ana demanded a thorough reading of the script and realized that Marta is anything but a stock character, so she accepted the role and knocked it out of the park, showing off her acting chops alongside heavyweights Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, and Daniel Craig.
