There are a ton of wonderful things about J.K. Rowling’s magical Wizarding World. Not only did Rowling introduce us to Harry Potter aka, The Boy Who Lived, she also fleshed out a massive world of magic that included generations and legacies of witches and wizards across time.
From Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the other various magical school across the world to the entire Wizarding government that is hidden from the Muggle eye, Rowling’s writings and stories are so realistic.
Still one of our favorite aspects of this magical universe is the food. From the great feasts at Hogwarts to Mrs. Weasley’s dinner table and certainly from Honeyduke’s, the wonderful candy shop in Hogsmeade, there are a ton of treats to be delighted by. While you can get some of these treats at Universal’s Studies at the Harry Potter Wizarding World, since it’s closed due to the coronavirus, here’s a special treat to make at home.
Harry Potter tried magical treats for the first time on the Hogwarts Express
In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry first learns about his magical origins. Despite the crash course about the Wizarding World that Hagrid gives him, he doesn’t learn about any of the magical treats until he meets his best friend, Ron Weasley on the Hogwarts Express train.
Honeydukes brilliantly put an express trolley on the train for students to indulge in during their journey to school. While Ron was reluctantly content with the sandwich his mother had packed him, Harry was eager to try everything.
For 11 sickles, he and Ron indulged in Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Bean, Cauldron Cakes, Chocolate Frogs, Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum, Jelly Slugs, Liquorice wands, and Pumpkin Pasties.
You can eat Wizarding World food in real life.
At the Hogesmeade sector of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, guests can indulge at Three Broomsticks. In addition to butterbeer, tavern food like the ‘Great Feast Platter’, Fish And Chips, Shepherd’s Pie, Beef Pasties, Turkey Legs, and Fresh Vegetables are also available. For older guests, Hog’s Head has butterbeer and pumpkin Juice, domestic and imported beers, specialty drinks, wine, spirits, and mixed drinks.
Diagon Alley has even more options. From Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour which has everything from Butterbeer. Sticky Toffee Pudding, Earl Grey and Lavender flavors. Meanwhile, the Leaky Cauldron boats, bangers and Mash, Fisherman’s Pie, Toad in the Hole, Ploughman’s Platter, and more.
However, the best way to begin trying new Potter-inspired treats is right from your kitchen.
Harry Potter’s Homemade Butterbeer Recipe
If you’re having a Harry Potter marathon, Megan Porta from Pip & Ebby shared the perfect Butterbeer recipe for everyone in the family to enjoy. Butterbeer is one of the most discussed beverages in Rowling’s universe and it’s a cold sweet drink that tastes like a buttery cream soda.
Ingredients
- 8 ice cubes
- Half of a 1.75-quart container of vanilla ice cream
- 3 cups of cream soda (24 oz.)
- 6 oz. butterscotch topping (found in the ice cream toppings section)
Steps
Place the ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth. Pour into glasses, top with whipped cream and a drizzle of butterscotch syrup and serve immediately.
If you want to give your drink an adult flair, you can add 1/2 cup of vodka or rum to the blender after all of the other ingredients have been pureed. Mix until just incorporated and serve!
