Violence Erupts in Rakwok Community: Three Lives Lost
In a tragic incident in Rakwok, located in the Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, gunmen have reportedly killed three young individuals and left two others injured. The attack occurred during a raid on the community, resulting in widespread destruction of farmland.
On the morning of Wednesday, November 6, 2024, armed assailants launched their attack around 10 AM, targeting residents, including those engaged in normal activities. The assault led to the immediate deaths of three youths, with additional shots fired at nearby individuals.
Barrister Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, the President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, confirmed that the victims identified were Mr. Chollom Daniel (27), Mr. Jang Joseph (21), and Mr. Richard Dapel (18). Three others were hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the incident.
Mwantiri expressed deep concern regarding the increase in violence, highlighting instances of murder, ambushes targeting women, and the deliberate destruction of crops, primarily attributed to militia believed to be of Fulani origin.
He reported that significant devastation has impacted the agriculture sector, particularly in the Riyom area, where large-scale attacks on villages have taken place. Multiple communities, including Jol, Rim, Litton, and Rinyam, experienced devastating losses as crops were burned, particularly noted in the recent attacks where harvested maize was set ablaze.
The damage inflicted is estimated at over 100 hectares of farmland—leaving distressed farmers grappling with their losses. Security agencies previously engaged to protect these farming communities have seemingly failed to prevent these crimes.
Mwantiri urged local security forces, specifically Operation Safe Haven, to take immediate action to address the escalation of violence in the region.
He expressed concerns that these continuous aggressions are part of a broader strategy by the militia to seize territory or repeat past atrocities reminiscent of previous violent outbreaks.
Despite the challenges, he committed to advocating for peace and supporting efforts led by local government and security teams, urging investigations into the recent violence at Rakwok and calling for compensation for those affected by the destruction of their properties.
In response, Hon. Pwajok Stephen Gyang, the Executive Chairman of Barkin Ladi Local Government, visited the village to express condolences. He condemned the recurring violence, emphasizing the urgent need for better security measures to protect communities from such unprovoked attacks.
While acknowledging previous efforts to stabilize the area, he called for heightened security presence to thwart further incidents. He also proposed the implementation of early warning systems to enhance community safety, aiming for a comprehensive restoration of peace.
Following his visit, an emergency security discussion was convened with key security leaders to strategize measures to ensure the safety and security of the residents in Barkin-Ladi.
