An unidentified driver tragically lost their life in a bus accident early in the morning on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in Lagos.
As per the statement from Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident occurred near the state Secretariat on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, heading towards Otedola Bridge.
The incident involved a mini bus that collided with a long truck, reportedly due to brake failure linked to overspeeding.
The crash’s force left the mini bus’s driver trapped in the wreckage.
Adebayo noted that LASTMA Officers responded quickly to ensure the rescue of the other passengers, all of whom were unharmed.
“In a joint effort, LASTMA Officers, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) team, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) worked tirelessly to free the trapped driver.
“Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the driver was found deceased. His body was then handed over to the FRSC officials, while the local police provided security during the rescue operation,” stated Adebayo.
In response to the accident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki emphasized the dangers of excessive speeding and urged all road users to comply with traffic safety regulations.
Bakare-Oki underscored the critical importance of following traffic laws, maintaining safe driving speeds, and ensuring vehicles are properly maintained.
“This tragic incident highlights the serious outcomes of reckless driving. We urge every road user to prioritize safety and remain vigilant while driving,” he remarked.
He expressed LASTMA’s heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enhancing road safety and avoiding further tragedies.
