Tragedy struck in Egwuma community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State as five individuals fell victim to an attack by suspected herdsmen. The unfortunate incident took place on Sunday, July 14, 2024, when the villagers were targeted by the herdsmen.
According to reports, the youths conducted a search in the bushes and recovered the bodies of the five deceased villagers. To safeguard the community from further attacks, the youths have organized themselves while also alerting the security authorities about the situation.
Confirming the incident, the State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Sewuese Anene, disclosed the deployment of extra personnel to the region to ensure peace is maintained. Additionally, Mr Godwin Edoh, a member of the State House of Assembly representing Agatu constituency, verified the attack but stated that the number of victims was 12.
Expressing concerns over the recurring attacks on his constituents, the lawmaker urged the government and security agencies to implement proactive measures to prevent such incidents. He highlighted the vulnerability of the area and the abandonment of villages due to the constant threat of attacks.
