A man named Nnamdi Nwite Ugo was reportedly fatally shot by a lawyer, identified as Ununu Sunday Uguru, during the festivities following the Izi Unuphu Power of Attorney community election in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, according to NigerianTribune.
The Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney is tasked with overseeing lands in the region and has been actively involved in reclaiming lands it deems to have been unlawfully acquired or transferred to non-indigenous individuals.
An election took place on August 22, 2024, to select new leaders for the organization. It was reported that a supporter of Ununu secured a significant position in the election, resulting in celebrations within the community.
During the celebratory event post-election, Ununu, who serves as the group’s legal counsel, discharged his firearm. Regrettably, a bullet hit the victim, Ugo, piercing through his mouth. He was promptly taken to the hospital where he passed away on August 23.
A local resident disclosed that a sum of money had allegedly been pledged to the deceased’s distant relatives for his funeral arrangements as his parents are deceased.
The State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu, verified the incident stating that Ununu has been apprehended.
