UNICAL Professor Faces Suspension Due to Misconduct Allegations

The Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, has issued a suspension letter stating that Dr. Idung did not return money collected from students intended for their induction into the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).

UNICAL

Dr. Joseph Idung, a faculty member in the Science Laboratory Technology department at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), has been suspended.

According to a report by Tribune, the suspension is due to Dr. Idung’s failure to reimburse funds he collected from students regarding their induction into NISLT.

This action follows the recent suspension and dismissal of Dr. Joseph Akpan, the Acting Head of the Pharmacology Department, due to his involvement in manipulating exam scores, as disclosed by the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC).

The administration voiced disappointment over Dr. Idung’s inability to return the purportedly taken funds. The letter notes that Vice-Chancellor Professor Florence Obi has mandated his suspension from university responsibilities to facilitate an investigation by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU).

Dr. Idung is also required to return all university property he has and must stay off campus unless he is summoned by ACTU.

Furthermore, the suspension letter instructs the Bursar to reduce Dr. Idung’s salary to half during this disciplinary period.
