A 35-year-old individual named Usman Kawu has been taken into custody for possessing counterfeit $1,000 bills.

 

The Gombe State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed this incident.

 

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 2, 2025, Abdullahi reported that officers from the Lawanti Airport Division apprehended the suspect during a surveillance operation.

 

Kawu was found with ten counterfeit $100 bills, which he alleged were handed to him by an associate for trading purposes.

 

“The Gombe State Police Command, led by CP Bello Yahaya psc(+), would like to inform the public about a case involving criminal collaboration and possession of fake currency,” the statement indicated.

 

On June 28, 2025, around 14:04 hours, police from the Lawanti Airport Division detained Usman Kawu, a resident of Kuji Kwadon Village, Yamaltu-Deba LGA, Gombe State.

 

“The suspect was found attempting to use suspected counterfeit American dollar bills to deceive innocent individuals,” it continued.

 

“Initial investigations uncovered he had ten $100 notes suspected to be fake, amounting to approximately N1,500,000 (One Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira) in local currency. He also possessed N10,000 (Ten Thousand Naira) hidden in his inner trousers, which were seized as evidence.”

 

“During questioning, the suspect admitted to the offense but claimed the counterfeit money was provided to him by an unnamed accomplice.”

 

“Efforts are underway to locate this accomplice and recover additional evidence. The investigation continues.”

 

“The Gombe State Police Command is dedicated to protecting the safety and financial well-being of its citizens. Updates will be shared in due course.”
