The Police Command in Benue State has launched an inquiry into the tragic shooting death of a young woman named Emmanuella Ahenjir in Makurdi.
CSP Anene Sewuese Catherine, the Public Relations Officer for the Benue State Police, shared that the incident took place early on Friday, May 16, 2025.
At around 4:00 a.m., officers on patrol at Duku Park, Wurukum, reported a concerning situation via radio.
Catherine noted, “On 16/5/2025 at roughly 4:00 a.m., a communication was received from the police team stationed at Duku Park. They attempted to stop a vehicle returning from the Benue Links area, but the driver fled, driving in the opposite direction while firing shots at them. The police returned fire, but the vehicle escaped.”
“Later, around 10:00 a.m., it was reported that Emmanuella Ahenjir, a student from Federal University, Wukari in Taraba State, had succumbed to her injuries at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.”
“Upon reaching the hospital, investigators were informed about the victim, and her body was taken to the morgue for an autopsy.”
“An individual named Apase Keghter, who was in the vehicle, was located at the hospital and questioned.”
“Mr. Apase stated that they had been out enjoying the nightlife at Newcastle Event Centre and were heading home when they mistakenly drove on the wrong side of the road, passing the checkpoint without stopping, although they did not fire shots.”
“They claimed to have been shot at by the police and continued to the Welfare Quarters until they noticed a flat tire, at which point they called for a taxi to take them to the hospital.”
“The vehicle they were in, along with their belongings and other passengers, are currently unaccounted for.”
“CP Emenari Ifeanyi has instructed a comprehensive investigation into the situation, assuring the victim’s family and friends of his dedication to uncovering the facts and maintaining justice.”
