The flame-wielding Maddy from Code 8 is played by none other than Laysla de Oliveira — better known as the malevolent, key-swiping echo Dodge from the streamer’s latest hit series, Locke & Key.
The show is an adaptation of the comic series from creators Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. Oliveira’s character is the principal antagonist of the series — though, thanks to the Identity Key, the entity “Dodge” is likely to be portrayed by quite a few different actors and actresses as the show’s plot continues to unfold. The version of Dodge portrayed by Oliveira uses her — shall we say – feminine mystique to trick high school loner Sam Lesser (Thomas Mitchell Barnet) into murdering Rendell Locke (Bill Heck) on the series’ very first episode. She then cons Rendell’s son Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott) into breaking her out of her wellhouse jail so she can begin her reign of terror.
Before Locke & Key, the 28-year-old knockout was just getting her acting career off the ground. She appeared on a single episode of the USA series Covert Affairs in 2012 (alongside another familiar actress, Piper Perabo of Angel Has Fallen) and occupied similar guest spots on a few other genre shows, including Nikita, iZombie, and the gone-before-its-time (also super-human-centric) Fox drama The Gifted. Additionally, Oliveira also landed the lead role as Becky DeMuth in the 2019 Netflix horror movie In the Tall Grass.
Between Code 8 and Locke & Key, Laysla de Oliveira is already having a banner year on Netflix. Given her recent successes, we’re sure that the best is yet to come.
