Bode George, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has rejected rumors suggesting that Nyesom Wike, the former Rivers State governor and current FCT Minister, has control over the party.
This statement comes amid allegations that Wike exercises unchecked authority within the party.
In an interview with Arise TV on June 26, George addressed these concerns.
During the discussion, host Rufai Oseni pointed out that individuals with financial influence, rather than those with sound ideas, are driving Nigerian politics.
“If expertise was the key to success, academics would be leading Nigeria by now. It’s not about knowledge; it’s about financial backing. Politics in Nigeria revolves around money, which is why there are claims that Wike financed the party during tough times,” he remarked.
“You mentioned that no one is greater than the party, yet as it stands, Wike seems to hold more power than the party itself,” Rufai told George.
In his reply, George firmly refuted this claim.
“Absolutely not! I disagree with the notion that Wike owns the party. He joined just like everyone else. If you think his wealth is the sole reason he remains in the party, just wait for the NEC meeting, where significant actions will be taken against those who err. That will show that the party is very much alive,” he asserted.
“When did Wike become the owner of the party? Who claims he has that ownership? He has made his contributions, but to say he owns it is a fallacy. It is simply not true.”
“We are not a party owned by a single individual.”
When asked what party he was alluding to, George replied:
“The APC. He openly stated that he is in charge.”
