Captain Marvel 2 is officially in the works. Aside from confirming Brie Larson’s return, filmmakers haven’t released many details about the movie. With the door wide open for speculation, fans are buzzing about Henry Cavill stepping in to play Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they think he’ll make his debut in Captain Marvel 2.
What we know about ‘Captain Marvel 2’
Just one year after the release of Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios greenlit a sequel and confirmed Brie Larson would be back in the lead role. Considering how well the first movie did at the box office, the news doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Captain Marvel brought in $1.2 billion in global ticket sales and became the 23rd highest-grossing film of all time.
In the 2019 film, fans saw Carol Danvers teaming up with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to discover her human roots after being brainwashed and trained by the Kree. The character also made an appearance in Avengers: Endgame, where she helped the Avengers team finally defeat Thanos and bring back the people who disappeared.
There’s no confirmation on where Danvers story will go in Captain Marvel 2. But because the character appeared in the 2013 Wolverine comics, fans think she will cross paths with Wolverine in the upcoming film.
Henry Cavill is rumored to be in talks with Marvel
As reported by The Digital Weekly, some sources say Marvel Studios is in talks with Henry Cavill. The buzz is that Cavill is being tapped to play MCU’s next Wolverine. The role was previously held by Australian actor Hugh Jackman, whose final stint as the clawed superhero was in the 2017 Marvel film, Logan.
If there is any truth to this report, fans believe Cavill might make an appearance as Wolverine in Captain Marvel 2. Of course, this is all speculation. Neither Marvel or Cavill have confirmed the rumor, and until they do, fans should probably take these reports with a grain of salt.
Would Henry Cavill leave the DCEU to play Wolverine in ‘Captain Marvel 2’?
Henry Cavill is known for his portrayal of Superman in the DC Extended Universe. He first took on the role of Clark Kent/Kal-El in Man of Steel in 2013. He then reprised the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. The next year, he donned the red cape for a third time in Justice League opposite Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot.
While keeping in mind that this is all speculation, if Cavill were asked to join the MCU as Wolverine, it would be interesting to see what he decides. He’s been very attached to his DC character, enough so that he named his beloved dog Kal after him.
However, if Cavill takes the role of Wolverine, he won’t be the first actor to jump from one comic book universe to another. Ben Affleck played Daredevil before he became Batman, and Halle Berry was Storm in X-Men before she became Catwoman.
What’s really going on behind the scenes at Marvel Studios is anyone’s guess. So fans will just have to wait and see what the MCU and Cavill have in store.
