A nurse named Amarachukwu Nzekwe, aged 38, has been taken into custody by security agents. She was apprehended for harming her 13-year-old nephew using a heated laundry iron in Anambra State.
The information was revealed in a press release on Wednesday by the Media Aide to the state Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare, Chidimma Ikeanyionwu. The suspect, who hails from Ezinifite in Aguata Local Government Area of the state, was arrested by security agents in cooperation with the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare after the incident garnered attention on social media.
During questioning, she claimed she was disciplining her nephew for stealing from her.
The statement clarified, “The incident that gained traction on social media was brought to the notice of Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, on Sunday, August 18, 2024, leading to the arrest the next day.
“The suspect, Nzekwe, from Ezinifite in Aguata Local Government Area, stated that she was disciplining her nephew for stealing from her.
“According to her, she used a heated laundry iron to cause injury to the 13-year-old, and subsequently confined him at home without proper medical care or attention.”
Following the rescue of the boy, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Ify Obinabo, expressed anger over the incident and promised to seek justice for the young boy. Obinabo also cautioned potential offenders to refrain from such actions as they will not be condoned in the state.
At present, the suspect has been handed over to the police for further investigation with intentions to bring charges in court.
