In April, head coach Arne Slot guided Liverpool to their first Premier League title during his initial season with the team, finishing the league with 82 points.
This season, Liverpool has enjoyed an impressive run in the Premier League, achieving 25 victories and suffering only four defeats across 37 matches. While many have praised the Reds’ league performance this season, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed a contrasting view.
Having secured second place in the Premier League for the last two seasons, Arsenal is poised to repeat this feat by season’s end. On both occasions, the Gunners finished with more points than the current title holders.
Before Arsenal’s semifinal defeat to PSG in the Champions League, Arteta characterized Liverpool’s league triumph as a matter of being ‘in the right place at the right time.’
“Winning titles requires timing and circumstance. Liverpool won the title with fewer points than we had in previous seasons. With our points from those seasons, we would have won two Premier League championships,” he stated.
“Being in the right moment and place is crucial. Let’s hope we are in the right situation in Paris to make it to the final,” Arteta added.
In response, Slot has commented on Arteta’s remarks, noting that one cannot simply rely on luck to win a league title.
Arne Slot’s take on Mikel Arteta’s remarks regarding Liverpool’s Premier League title
When asked to share his views on Arteta’s statements, Slot said (comments via BBC Sport) that he agrees with the Arsenal manager, but believes the sentiment also applies to other competitions. He asserted that while luck can aid in securing a final, it is not enough to claim a league title.
“I completely concur with him on that, just not when it comes to Premier League seasons. In tournaments like the Champions League or FA Cup, timing and place matter. Over a long season, the best team is typically the one that comes out on top,” he explained.
“A final can be reached with a bit of good fortune, but it’s impossible to win a league solely through luck. Perhaps we were fortunate that City experienced a tough stretch for the first time in five years.”
“However, we contributed to that difficult stretch by defeating them at their home ground when they had already suffered a few losses, and we hadn’t lost any. That’s essential if you wish to win a league like this. Consistent point drops can’t happen over an extended period,” Slot concluded.
Slot and his team are scheduled to face FA Cup champions Crystal Palace in their final Premier League match of the season on May 25 at Anfield.
