This summer’s transfer window is crucial for Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta, who is in urgent need of reinforcements to strengthen the squad and make a serious push for the Premier League title next season.

Under Arteta’s leadership, Arsenal has demonstrated potential, although results have yet to show consistent success. Notably, the team showcased its abilities by defeating Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals. However, the club is eager to add trophies to its collection, having last won silverware five years ago.

As such, Arsenal is focused on acquiring players for key positions, including Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who has been identified as a target for the 2023/24 season. Reports from David Ornstein suggest that Arsenal is nearing a deal, despite interest from Real Madrid.

The reported fee for the 26-year-old is approximately €65m (£55m), which exceeds his release clause of around €60m (£51m).

Arsenal’s willingness to pay above the release clause stems from a negotiated agreement with Sociedad, allowing the payment to be spread over smaller instalments rather than in a single lump sum.

Ornstein has indicated that Real Madrid’s interest is not a significant factor in Arsenal’s progress towards finalizing the deal for the Spanish international. If completed, this transfer would represent a significant boost for Arsenal’s midfield.

What impact would Zubimendi have at Arsenal?

As one of the most skilled players in his position, Zubimendi is expected to bring both composure and stability to Arsenal’s midfield. His combative style will enable Declan Rice to operate with greater freedom.

According to WhoScored, Zubimendi has been involved in midfield possession activities at least 36 times more than any other La Liga player over the past three seasons, totaling 329 times.

Since the 2019/20 season, he ranks second in La Liga for successfully contesting 250+ aerial duels, with a success rate of 65.85%, as reported by Squawka. To illustrate, he has battled for 432 aerial duels, winning 284 of them.

Zubimendi’s ability to control the tempo of the game, disrupt opposing plays, and maintain a strong aerial presence will significantly enhance Arsenal’s midfield dynamics while granting greater freedom to his teammates.
