Barcelona is reportedly making preparations for Wojciech Szczesny’s future with the team after this season concludes.
In October, the club persuaded Szczesny to come out of retirement and transfer to Barcelona on a free contract due to Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury, which ended his season.
La Liga permits emergency signings in the event of significant injuries, particularly for goalkeepers, prompting Szczesny to accept an offer from Hansi Flick.
However, following his departure from Juventus last summer, the 34-year-old has not played in any matches, and Flick has relied on Inaki Pena as Ter Stegen’s replacement.
During the international break, Szczesny has been focusing on improving his fitness to get back into Flick’s plans before the season ends in 2025.
Despite Flick’s decision to stick with Pena, Szczesny is anticipated to see playing time in the upcoming weeks, with Barcelona competing in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, as well as the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey kicking off in January.
In a display of confidence in his experience, reports from Marca suggest Barcelona plans to extend his short-term deal, which is set to expire at the year’s end.
Although Szczesny has not yet appeared in a first-team match, the club is prepared to offer him a new contract that will last until at least the end of the 2025/26 season.
Additionally, there are indications that Ter Stegen is making positive progress in his recovery from knee surgery and could potentially return to action in the latter part of the season if all goes according to plan.
