Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, has shared concerning news regarding defender Ben White’s recovery period following knee surgery.
The 27-year-old player is anticipated to spend a minimum of a few months recovering, which leaves the Gunners without a crucial team member during the festive season and as they aim to extend their record in the FA Cup.
In a press briefing before their upcoming Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, Arteta indicated that White’s absence is likely to extend over a significant timeframe.
Despite this, Arteta remains hopeful that White could return earlier than the six-month benchmark usually associated with such surgeries.
“Unfortunately, Ben White will be sidelined for several months,” Arteta stated.
“He has faced various challenges and it has been an ongoing issue, but we reached a point where a decision was necessary.
“His condition has not shown improvement in recent weeks. We recognize Ben’s determination to push himself, but ultimately, we needed to ensure his wellbeing by opting for surgery.
“He was in agreement with this decision, and it’s expected that he will be unavailable for several months. We’ll have to monitor his recovery closely.
“I don’t anticipate it stretching to six months, but I also cannot specify the exact timeline.”
If recovery does extend to six months, it could mean the end of his season.
However, Arteta’s optimistic outlook leaves the possibility open for White to assist his team in the closing stages of the season and maybe even return to play for England for the first time since March.
White previously had a falling out with England’s coaching staff during the 2022 World Cup, which resulted in his exit from Gareth Southgate’s squad.
With Thomas Tuchel now leading the England team, many fans are eager for White to potentially reclaim his place on the national stage.
