After the group phase, the Copa America 2024 proceeds to the knockout stage with quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final.
For the remaining teams, the focus is on the ultimate game on July 14 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
In case of a draw, how will the outcome be decided in knockout matches? Here we discuss the extra time, penalty kick, and relevant regulations.
Penalty Kick and Extra-Time Rules
During the Copa America 2024 knockout phase, if a match is tied after 90 minutes in the quarterfinals, semifinals, or third-place match, penalty kicks will determine the winner.
In the final, if the game ends even in regular time, an extra 30-minute period will follow with two 15-minute halves.
The extra time will play out in full even if goals are scored, unlike the “Golden Goal” rule.
If a tie persists after extra time, a penalty shootout will decide the winner, starting with five penalties per side and then sudden death.
