On May 17, Manchester City faced a 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final held at Wembley Stadium.
This loss means that Manchester City has no remaining opportunities to claim silverware this season, and will now aim for a top-five finish in the Premier League to secure a Champions League spot for the next year.
During Saturday’s match, Claudio Echeverri made his debut for Manchester City, substituting for Omar Marmoush in the 76th minute.
Although the decision to introduce a newcomer in such an important match raised eyebrows, Premier League icon Alan Shearer suggests that this might signal the end of the line for one current Man City player.
In a discussion on The Rest Is Football podcast following the FA Cup final, Shearer expressed that the outcome did not come as a shock given the club’s performance throughout the season.
“Did I find it surprising that City lost? Not at all, because that’s been their form this season. They didn’t earn the victory; they didn’t put in enough effort,” he remarked.
Shearer also commented on Jack Grealish, suggesting that the English player’s tenure at the Etihad may be at an end.

What are Alan Shearer’s thoughts on Jack Grealish’s future at Man City?
Shearer believes that Guardiola’s choice to field 19-year-old Echeverri in favor of Grealish indicates that the Aston Villa alum’s days at Man City are numbered.
Since his move to the Etihad in 2021, Grealish has fallen down the selection hierarchy under Guardiola’s management. The 29-year-old has started only 16 out of 31 matches this season, scoring three goals and providing five assists.
Shearer suggested that Grealish is no longer in favor with Guardiola and is unlikely to continue within the squad.
“Regarding Jack Grealish, his time at Man City has come to an end; he needs to move on.
“For him (Guardiola) to opt for a debutant like Claudio Echeverri and bring on Gundogan when they’re in dire need of a goal instead of Jack Grealish… it signifies that his time is over, he’s finished at Man City, he needs to depart,” he stated.
“For whatever reason, Pep has decided to move on from him; he doesn’t have confidence in him anymore. His time is really over,” concluded Shearer.
With Grealish’s current contract at the Etihad extending until the summer of 2027, it remains uncertain what the future holds for the English star.
