The Euro 2024 championship is now at a crucial stage with the knockout rounds commencing.
Spain, having won all their group stage matches, emerged as a strong contender.
Teams like Slovenia and Denmark secured progression with fewer wins or draws.
As the tournament progresses, a definitive winner must be determined in every game.
In the case of drawn matches, special rules come into play to decide the outcome.
Guidelines for Extra Time and Penalty Kicks
During the knockout phase of Euro 2024, if a match remains tied after the regular 90 minutes, an extra time period of 30 minutes will be played in two halves of 15 minutes each. This tournament does not apply the “golden goal” rule.
Previously, the golden goal rule meant the team scoring first during extra time would win instantly, but this approach has been criticized for promoting defensive play. If a tie persists after extra time, the match will be settled through a penalty shootout with five initial spot-kicks per team, followed by sudden-death shots if needed.
The rules for extra time and penalties apply to all knockout matches from the Round of 16 to the final on July 14.
