Chris Wood’s unexpected challenge to Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race has earned him the Premier League Player of the Month honor.
The New Zealand striker, with eight goals in just 10 matches this season, scored four of those during October’s three Premier League games.
At 32, Wood made history as the first player from Nottingham Forest and the first New Zealander to secure this accolade, surpassing competitors like Matz Sels from his own team, Facundo Buonanotte from Leicester City, Josko Gvardiol of Manchester City, Brentford’s Bryan Mbuemo, Cole Palmer from Chelsea, and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.
“I’m thrilled with this recognition; it’s a significant achievement,” Wood stated.
“It reflects the team’s effort and synergy. I owe it to my teammates who create opportunities for me, which I’m glad to convert into goals.”
Nottingham Forest is impressively positioned third in the league, with coach Nuno Espirito Santo also recognized as Manager of the Month for earning seven points from nine available.
Haaland vs. Wood
Erling Haaland, the star of Manchester City, is vying for his third straight Golden Boot with 11 goals in 10 appearances, placing him three goals ahead of Wood.
Most of Haaland’s tally was achieved early on, with nine goals in the opening four matches, largely due to two hat-tricks against Ipswich Town and West Ham.
At the same point in the season, Wood also had two goals but has significantly narrowed the gap as October progressed.
In terms of efficiency, Haaland still leads with a goal every 82 minutes for City, while Wood scores slightly less frequently at one goal every 101 minutes.
