Barcelona has expressed confidence in retaining Ilkay Gundogan for the upcoming 2024/25 season. The seasoned midfielder, who arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City last year, has faced speculation about his future recently.
Gundogan has voiced his interest in playing in Turkey before retiring, but clarified that it’s a long-term aspiration for his later career. Despite a visit to Turkey earlier this month for personal reasons, transfer rumors have persisted.
His absence in Barcelona’s season opener raised more questions, with Robert Lewandowski securing a 2-1 victory over Valencia. At the end of the game, head coach Hansi Flick provided an update on the situation with the ex-Bayern Munich player.
Flick mentioned, “He didn’t participate tonight due to an eye injury sustained in the Joan Gamper Trophy against Monaco.” Flick expressed optimism about Gundogan staying, citing their strong relationship.
Barcelona’s next match under Flick’s management will be against Athletic Bilbao at home on August 24.
