Bayern Munich is on the verge of confirming their first acquisition of the summer, Jonathan Tah, who is making a move from Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Tah completed his medical examination today at their facility and will be announced as a new member of the team soon. Journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that a contract until 2029 might be offered to the 29-year-old.

Having concluded his contract with Leverkusen this season after a decade, the Germany international chose to take the next step in his career. Barcelona also expressed interest in the defender, but he ultimately opted for the German champions.

Tah began his professional journey at Hamburger SV before transferring to Leverkusen in 2015, including a brief loan spell at Fortuna Düsseldorf for a season. He departs Leverkusen having made an impressive 402 appearances.

The uncertainty surrounding Bayern’s defense was evident during their last season, particularly in the Champions League, highlighting the urgent need for an experienced player to solidify their back line.

His addition will also likely result in Kim Min-jae being pushed further down the selection, with the expectation that he will partner Dayot Upamecano at the center of defense.

How will Tah fit into Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich strategy?

Tah brings significant experience and physical strength to the Bayern defense. Over the past ten years at Leverkusen, he was instrumental in their domestic success, particularly during Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten Bundesliga campaign.

According to Squawka, out of a total of 3,060 minutes this season in the Bundesliga, Tah played 2,970 minutes—the highest in his team.

His passing ability will be invaluable to Kompany, as he has completed 2,295 passes with an outstanding accuracy of 93%. He also had a flawless season, without making any mistakes leading to goals.

Being a natural leader, his calm presence on the field will bolster Bayern’s defense. This transfer could also give Kompany the flexibility to implement a three-man defensive setup.
