Barcelona supporters eager for Frenkie de Jong to return to form will need some patience, as Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman revealed an unsettling update regarding the midfielder’s recovery.
Although De Jong has made a limited return in recent games, Koeman indicates that the player is still not fully healed from his ankle injury.
De Jong’s Recovery Journey Continues
Frenkie de Jong has been sidelined since April due to an ankle ligament injury, which resulted in him missing both the European Championship and the beginning of Barcelona’s 2024-25 season.
He made a brief appearance as a substitute in Barcelona’s matches in the Champions League and La Liga, but Koeman decided against including him in the Netherlands squad for their Nations League fixtures.
Koeman explained (through Sport) his choice, detailing De Jong’s difficulty in regaining his pre-injury form after an extended absence.
“I spoke on the phone last week, and out of respect, I feel he is still too far off [from fitness],” Koeman stated, emphasizing that De Jong has yet to reach full fitness.
“He played a bit, and that was intimidating for him. It was tough for him.
“Frenkie needs to regain his rhythm and reach 100% fitness, and I believe it will take some more time for that.”
When Will Frenkie de Jong Fully Recover?
Barcelona supporters find themselves in a waiting phase but are hopeful that their vital midfielder takes the time required to achieve complete fitness.
After all, returning too quickly can lead to further complications. The fans are eager to see De Jong excel and orchestrate the midfield once more — but for the moment, patience seems crucial.
As the season progresses, Barcelona will require him at his peak performance, but currently, it appears De Jong’s return is still unfolding.
The Catalan team does have several players expected to return to the starting XI soon – including Gavi.
