Liverpool manager Arne Slot is gearing up for a busy January transfer window as he aims for the Premier League title in 2025.
The team has had a strong start to the 2024/25 season, holding the top position in the EPL with only one league defeat and a nine-point advantage.
Despite the team’s success, Slot is aware that a long season will necessitate additional players to enhance the squad’s depth.
With some players possibly leaving on free transfers and ongoing uncertainty regarding contracts for Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Dutch manager is also focusing on the club’s future.
According to Teamtalk.com, Slot has identified two key targets for the January transfer window, one of whom previously turned down the chance to join Liverpool.
Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi opted to stay at his childhood club in August, but circumstances in San Sebastián have reportedly changed.
Although Slot had initially suggested that Zubimendi’s move was not a possibility, the player’s release clause of £51m ($65m) is still active if Liverpool chooses to pursue him again.
The club was prepared to trigger this clause before the current season, but Zubimendi’s concerns led to a halt in negotiations.
La Real is not keen on selling the 25-year-old but may have to consider their options if the release clause is triggered and Liverpool makes a renewed effort.
Another player on Slot’s radar is Bournemouth’s highly regarded left-back Milos Kerkez, valued at about £40m ($50m) as part of a succession plan for Andy Robertson.
With Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas already in the squad, Slot aims to have at least two players available for each position and is anticipated to compete with Manchester United for the Hungarian international’s signature.
