Liverpool achieved an important 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday, but expert David Lynch argues that this victory doesn’t yet qualify them as serious contenders for the title.
Despite gaining three points, Lynch feels Liverpool needs to demonstrate their competitiveness against Manchester City and Arsenal to truly be in the race for the Premier League title.
Curtis Jones shone brightly for Liverpool, earning a penalty and netting the crucial goal early in the second half. However, Chelsea largely controlled the match, possessing the ball for 58% of the game and restricting Liverpool to their lowest shot count at Anfield since February 2021.
Even though the Reds sit at the top of the league, just a point ahead of Manchester City, Lynch doesn’t find their display completely convincing.
David Lynch’s Perspective on Liverpool’s Title Chances
After the game, Lynch remarked, “It might be premature to declare Liverpool as title challengers at this point. Though it was a solid win, it lacked the dominant performance we’ve come to expect.”
He pointed out that supporters likely anticipated a more definitive victory, akin to last season’s comfortable win over Chelsea at home.
While Chelsea has made notable improvements under new coach Enzo Maresca, Lynch highlighted that Liverpool’s upcoming encounters, particularly against Arsenal at the Emirates, will provide a better gauge of their title aspirations.
Confidence Boost, But More Tests Ahead
Although Lynch was hesitant to label Liverpool as favorites, he acknowledged that the win over Chelsea could significantly enhance the team’s mentality. “Remaining at the top and establishing a margin between themselves and Chelsea is vital. It could bolster their confidence, making them believe they’re in the title race.”
This season, Liverpool has already triumphed over two teams from the “big six,” a feat that eluded them last year under Jurgen Klopp.
With 21 points after eight matches, they are four points ahead compared to the same stage last season, positioning them strongly. However, their ability to sustain this momentum against tougher opponents, such as Arsenal, remains uncertain.
A favorable outcome against the Gunners this weekend could solidify Liverpool’s claim as genuine title contenders.
