Lucas Paqueta, a midfielder for Brazil and West Ham, faced official charges for violating betting regulations set by English football on May 23, 2024.
The Football Association claims he breached rules six times concerning his actions during four Premier League games played between November 2022 and August 2023.
Paqueta publicly denied the accusations, asserting his determination to “fight with every breath to clear my name.”
This article examines the specific allegations against him, his strong rebuttal, and potential timelines for resolution.
Recent Developments: Paqueta Challenges ‘False and Misleading’ Reports
On October 17, Paqueta released a social media statement criticizing reports that inaccurately suggested he had been called for a hearing before the season concluded.
He urged the FA to uncover the source of these leaks, emphasizing that such exposure could jeopardize his right to a fair process.
He expressed frustration over “misleading and inaccurate” reports emerging in both England and Brazil, stating that some claims were entirely fabricated to jeopardize his defense. He highlighted concerns that these false reports might stem from someone close to his situation.
“The proceedings should remain confidential and are serious for my family and me. The leaks of incorrect information threaten my chance for a fair hearing. Therefore, I’ve instructed my lawyers to ask the FA for a full investigation into how this misinformation is being disclosed. I continue to deny the charges and am eager to prove my innocence,” he stated.

Details of the Allegations Against Paqueta
On May 23, the Football Association declared that Paqueta was charged with misconduct due to betting-related offenses.
He faces four charges under rule E5.1 and two under rule F3. The first rule states he allegedly “intentionally sought to receive a card from the referee.” He has until June 3 to respond to the claims.
The FA clarified: “The player is charged with four violations of FA Rule E5.1 regarding his behavior during Premier League matches against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United, and AFC Bournemouth. The allegations suggest he sought to influence these games by trying to receive a card from the referee, potentially affecting betting markets and allowing others to profit from betting.” Additionally, he has been charged with two violations of FA Rule F3 for not adhering to FA Rule F2 requirements.
Paqueta’s Firm Denial of the Betting Charges
After the FA’s announcement of charges, Paqueta responded in both English and Portuguese through his social media, firmly denying all accusations.

“I am extremely shocked and disheartened by the FA’s decision to charge me,” he said. “Over the past nine months, I’ve cooperated fully with their investigation and shared all the relevant information. I wholeheartedly deny the allegations and will passionately fight to clear my name. Due to this ongoing situation, I will refrain from further comment.”
West Ham expressed their commitment to continuously support Paqueta throughout the entire process and stated they would refrain from further comments until the matter is resolved.
Paqueta’s Transfer to West Ham
Paqueta switched to West Ham from the French club Lyon in August 2022 in a transfer believed to be worth an initial £36.5 million, potentially exceeding £50 million over time.
At 26 years old, he has become a key player for West Ham, contributing to their victory in the UEFA Europa Conference League in the 2022/23 season.
Paqueta was speculated to be heading to Manchester City before the 2023/24 season, but the transfer did not take place.
Participation in Copa America
Paqueta was part of Brazil’s 26-man squad for the Copa America, selected by coach Dorival Junior.
He played in all four matches for Brazil during the tournament held in the United States, where Brazil was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Uruguay through penalties.
