Pep Guardiola has cautioned Manchester City that their chance of securing a fifth consecutive Premier League title will end if they suffer a defeat against Liverpool next weekend.
City faced a significant setback, losing 4-0 to Tottenham on Saturday, which marked their first home defeat since November 2022—a loss that extends their current league losing streak to three matches.
Overall, their record has worsened to five defeats across all competitions, and they may find themselves eight points behind league leaders Liverpool when they visit Anfield—a venue where they haven’t won in front of fans since 2003.
When asked if trailing by 11 points would be too challenging to recover from, Guardiola responded, “Yes. Given Liverpool’s consistent winning, that’s correct.”
“We aren’t focused on the title race right now; our primary concern isn’t about the outcome of the season. If we end up not winning, it’s because we didn’t earn it. In the past, we secured victories because we merited them.”
City’s captain, Kyle Walker, who faced a tough game, reminded his teammates of the serious implications if they perform similarly against Liverpool.
“This match presents a perfect opportunity to bounce back and claim three points against the team currently ahead of us,” he stated to Sky Sports. “However, we cannot deliver a performance like that again, or we will be overrun.”
