Since signing with Manchester City, Erling Haaland has proven to be a formidable force. The Norwegian forward has set remarkable records, netting 75 goals in just 79 appearances in the Premier League.
His contributions have been pivotal for City’s recent achievements, including their notable treble victory in the 2022/23 season. This year, despite his team’s struggles, Haaland continues to be a prolific scorer, currently leading the league’s goal tally, ahead of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
However, some remain skeptical of his elite status. Rafael van der Vaart, a former player for Tottenham and Real Madrid, expressed a dissenting view regarding Haaland’s place among the world’s best strikers.
Rafael van der Vaart’s Critique of Erling Haaland
On The LineUp show (via BetMGM), Van der Vaart stated that he believes Haaland is not a world-class striker. He mentioned, “Without his speed, he’s just a regular player.”
The Dutch ex-international also pointed out that Haaland’s technical skills do not compare favorably to those of legends like Ruud van Nistelrooy, with whom he has played.
Van der Vaart remarked, “His technique isn’t up to par, and while he can thrive when City is performing well, his influence diminishes when they struggle. There’s something lacking that great strikers possess. I anticipate criticism for this view, but he doesn’t match the level of top strikers I played alongside, like Ruud van Nistelrooy.”
The commentator suggests that Haaland’s success is closely tied to the team’s overall performance. If City is not playing well, Haaland’s contributions appear limited.
“City needs Haaland, especially now, but where is he? That’s why he’s not counted among the elite strikers,” Van der Vaart pointed out, noting Haaland’s reduced role in build-up play.
Identifying Issues within Manchester City
Van der Vaart’s criticism extended beyond Haaland; he also highlighted City’s recent lackluster performances, labeling the team as “tired” and suggesting they require a transformation.
“The intensity that they’ve maintained under Pep Guardiola has vanished,” he noted, using Kevin De Bruyne’s recent struggles as an illustration.
With Manchester City winless in their last seven matches and Haaland finding the net just twice in his past eight league outings, the mounting pressure is palpable. Guardiola’s squad will face Nottingham Forest next, keen to rectify their recent downturn in form.
