Ruud van Nistelrooy has expressed his intention to stay at Manchester United and aspires to eventually take on the managerial role at Old Trafford.
Since Erik ten Hag’s departure last Monday, Van Nistelrooy has been guiding the team as the interim manager. His upcoming match on Sunday against Leicester City will mark his fourth and final game in this role before Ruben Amorim, the new head coach from Sporting CP, takes over on November 11.
As a former fan-favorite during his playing days, Van Nistelrooy joined Ten Hag’s coaching staff last summer. His position has become uncertain with Amorim set to bring in his own coaching crew.
At a recent press conference, the 48-year-old emphasized that he is not ready to end his journey with Manchester United just yet.
“Of course,” he affirmed when asked about his interest in a permanent managerial position.
In the meantime, he is open to supporting Amorim in any capacity.
“I considered my decision to join Manchester United as an assistant coach carefully,” he mentioned. “It was a special opportunity to be involved in the club during this phase.”
“I have always aimed to be a manager, and my two-year contract as an assistant still aligns with my current mindset,” he added.
Van Nistelrooy’s short tenure will be bracketed by the matches against Leicester.
Previously, United achieved a significant 5-2 victory over the Foxes in the Carabao Cup, followed by a 1-1 Premier League draw against Chelsea, and a recent 2-0 win against PAOK in the Europa League, with Amad Diallo scoring both goals.
