Wrexham’s cinematic journey might be gearing up for its most daring installment, with Newcastle’s Callum Wilson emerging as a potential star player.
Dietmar Hamann, a former midfielder for both Liverpool and Newcastle, has advised Ryan Reynolds, co-owner alongside Rob McElhenney, to pursue Wilson, who is facing an uncertain future at St. James’ Park.
During an interview with BettingLounge.co.uk, Hamann commented, “Signing Callum Wilson would greatly benefit Wrexham. With Newcastle likely to enhance their roster for the upcoming season, it will be increasingly challenging for him to secure playing time.
“For Wrexham to achieve promotion to the Premier League, they will need a squad that can compete at a Premier League level, considering the caliber of teams in the top tier of the Championship.”
At 33, Wilson is nearing the end of his contract and has had a difficult 2024–25 season, netting only once in an FA Cup match against Birmingham City and going without a goal in the Premier League for over a year.

After suffering a back and hamstring injury that sidelined him for three months earlier in the season, Wilson returned to fitness in February but has only started twice in the Premier League, both resulting in losses: a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in February and a recent 1-0 loss to Arsenal.
Since transferring to Newcastle from Bournemouth for £20 million in 2020, Wilson has scored 47 league goals in 110 matches, but his playing time has been reduced due to the emergence of Alexander Isak.
If Newcastle successfully acquires Canadian striker Jonathan David, who is anticipated to leave Lille this summer, Wilson’s departure could be imminent.
Fresh from three successive promotions, Wrexham aims even higher, and Wilson’s experience in the top tier could prove crucial.
Reynolds’ Premier League Aspirations: “That’s Our Target”
Ryan Reynolds has openly expressed the club’s ambition. Following their ascent to the Championship, he stated, “Our target is to reach the Premier League.”
Since acquiring the club for £2 million in 2021, Reynolds and McElhenney have propelled Wrexham from the National League to the Championship within three years.
With eyes set on a fourth consecutive promotion, Callum Wilson could be a pivotal addition to their extraordinary journey.
