An intense battle for the Serie A title culminated in a thrilling final matchday.
To heighten the suspense, the league’s organizers rescheduled Napoli’s home encounter with Cagliari and Inter Milan’s away game at Como to May 23, setting the stage for a dramatic, decisive clash on Friday night.
Napoli entered the last week knowing that a win would allow them to reclaim a title they previously held in the 2022/23 season.
With Simone Inzaghi’s Inter having dethroned them last year, the UEFA Champions League finalists aimed for consecutive triumphs. A Napoli misstep would allow Inter to clinch the title with a win against local rivals Como.
The Sporting News covered both matches, and here’s a recap of the action.
Who emerged victorious in the Serie A title race 2024/25?
Inter drew first blood as Stefan De Vrij netted in the 20th minute against Como. In Naples, the atmosphere grew tense at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
The breakthrough arrived just before halftime when Scott McTominay executed a stunning scissor-kick volley, marking his 12th goal of the season and igniting jubilant celebrations.

After that moment, Inter was under pressure, realizing that Antonio Conte, the coach who had previously led them to title success in 2020/21, was aiming for his sixth career league championship.
This became evident when former Inter player Romelu Lukaku scored effortlessly in the 51st minute.
Inter quickly followed up with a goal from Joaquin Correa, occurring just as veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina received a red card in the closing match of his career.
The Nerazzurri will now redirect their focus towards next Saturday’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Munich.

Which club holds the most Serie A titles?
Italian football has traditionally been dominated by a select few clubs, as evidenced by the fact that only 16 teams have historically secured the top-flight title since professional football’s inception in 1898.
Juventus boasts the record with 36 league titles overall, 29 of which were earned during the Serie A era. The club established a remarkable streak of nine consecutive titles from 2011/12 to 2019/20, though they haven’t claimed a championship since that period.
The two Milan clubs follow, with AC Milan just one title short of Inter. After them lies a significant gap to Genoa, who enjoyed early dominance in Italian football but has not claimed a title in over a century.
